Choosing your sleep source

How Sleep Tracker and HealthKit Sources decide which app or device Titan reads your sleep from, and which setting wins.

Published September 24, 2026

Titan reads sleep from Apple Health, and several apps and devices can write sleep there at once. Two settings decide which of them Titan uses. Sleep Tracker sets a preferred tracker, and the Sleep entry under HealthKit Sources limits Titan to the sources you allow. This article covers each setting, how missing nights are filled, and which setting wins when you use both.

You reach Settings from the avatar on Today, then You > Settings.

01Sleep Tracker

Open Settings > Recovery & Sleep > Sleep Preferences > Sleep Tracker. The default is Apple Watch. The menu lists 14 trackers.

  • Apple Watch
  • Pillow
  • SleepWatch
  • Oura
  • Biostrap
  • AutoSleep
  • Sleep Cycle
  • Sleep++
  • Connect
  • VeryFitPro
  • Rem
  • Eight Sleep
  • Mi Fit
  • SleepSpace

During setup, Titan checks Apple Health for sleep samples from the last 30 days. It shows only the trackers it recognizes, newest first, each with a "Last seen" time. If your current choice is missing from that list, Titan selects the most recently seen tracker. If no source maps to a known tracker, Titan keeps your current choice and tells you so. The Settings menu always shows all 14.

How Titan matches a tracker

Titan matches your choice by source name. It looks at the apps and devices behind your latest 500 sleep samples from the last 60 days. It keeps every source whose name contains the tracker's name, ignoring case. Apple Watch matches any source whose name contains "watch" or "apple".

Because the match is by name, a broad name can catch more than one app. Connect matches any source with "connect" in its name. If no source matches your choice, Titan applies no tracker filter and reads sleep from every source.

Missing nights fall back to other sources

Sleep Tracker sets a priority. For each day, Titan builds the night from your chosen tracker first. If that tracker has no session ending on that day, Titan builds the day from all your sleep sources instead. With Oura as your tracker, a night you left the ring on the charger uses your Apple Watch sleep.

02HealthKit Sources for Sleep

Open Settings > Health & Connected Apps > Data Sources & Integrations > HealthKit Sources > Sleep. The screen lists the sources that have written sleep to Apple Health, plus Oura when the direct connection is active. It has four controls.

  • Primary Source, set to Automatic by default.
  • Allowed Sources, one toggle per source.
  • Duplicate Handling, set to Prefer Primary by default.
  • Reset to All Sources, which clears every choice for Sleep.

Picking a Primary Source also turns that source on under Allowed Sources. Once any source is allowed, Titan reads sleep only from the allowed sources. This setting has no fallback. If none of your allowed sources recorded a night, that day has no sleep in Titan.

03Which setting wins

HealthKit Sources wins. Titan checks it first, and Sleep Tracker only applies while Sleep is set to All Sources there.

  • Sleep on All Sources, tracker matches a source. Titan reads your tracker first and fills missing days from all sources.
  • Sleep on All Sources, tracker matches nothing. Titan reads all sources.
  • Sleep has a primary or allowed source. Titan reads only those sources and ignores Sleep Tracker.

The Sleep row on the HealthKit Sources screen shows All Sources when nothing is set. Any other value there means Sleep Tracker is inactive. To hand control back to Sleep Tracker, open Sleep and tap Reset to All Sources.

04Oura and the direct connection

Oura sleep can reach Apple Health through the Oura app or through Titan's direct Oura connection. The Oura support article covers both routes. Titan tags the sleep it writes from the direct connection as Oura records, and Sleep Tracker skips those records when it matches sources.

With Oura as your Sleep Tracker, Titan matches only the sleep the Oura app writes to Apple Health. If you use the direct connection alone, the Oura choice matches nothing and Titan reads all sources. To make direct-connection sleep the source Titan reads, open HealthKit Sources > Sleep and set Primary Source to Oura. The direct connection appears in that list only while Oura is connected under Integrations.

05Picking a setup

If you track sleep with one device, the default setup works. Leave Sleep on All Sources and set Sleep Tracker to that device. If you wear two trackers and trust one more, pick it as Sleep Tracker so the other covers nights the first one misses. If you want Titan to ignore a source completely, use HealthKit Sources and accept that nights your allowed sources miss will stay empty.

When two sources overlap on the same night, Titan merges their samples. The sleep detection article explains the merge rules. If a night is missing, the missing sleep article walks through the checks.
